Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12: the one nutrient every vegan should plan for
B12 is made by bacteria, not plants. A plain-language guide to forms, doses and why methylcobalamin is popular.
Draft article. Medical review by a registered dietitian is pending before launch.
Vitamin B12 is produced by microorganisms, not by plants or animals. Animal foods contain it because animals accumulate it; plant foods generally do not. That is why major dietetic associations advise people on vegan diets to use fortified foods or a supplement.
B12 supports energy metabolism, red blood cell formation and normal nervous system function.* Methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin are both common forms.
Key points
- B12 supports normal energy metabolism.*
- Absorption from a single dose is limited, which is why supplements often use 250–1,000 mcg.
- Talk to your healthcare provider about testing your B12 status.
