Vitamin D3
Vitamin D3 from lichen: the vegan answer to lanolin
Most vitamin D3 is made from sheep's wool grease. Here is how lichen produces the same cholecalciferol, and why it matters for plant-based diets.
Draft article. Medical review by a registered dietitian is pending before launch.
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form of vitamin D your skin makes from sunlight. In supplements, nearly all D3 is produced from lanolin, the waxy grease in sheep's wool. It is legal and effective, but it is not vegan.
Lichen, a partnership between a fungus and an alga, makes the very same D3 molecule. Lichen-sourced D3 lets plant-based eaters get cholecalciferol rather than settling for D2 (ergocalciferol).
Key points
- Vitamin D supports immune function and the absorption of calcium for healthy bones.*
- D3 is fat-soluble, so take it with a meal that contains some fat.
- K2 (MK-7) is often paired with D3 to help direct calcium to bones.*
